Blepharoplasty (Eyelid surgery)
With aging or even in some patients with familial features, the skin of the eyelid is sagging and is associated with fatty herniation .
This leads to a puffy eye with a sad look.
We usually consider addressing the upper and lower eyelids in one setting because this is an aesthetic unit.
However some patients are bothered only by their upper or lower eyelids and we respect their concerns.
For the upper eyelid, we remove the skin excess as well as the fat bags through an incision in the crease so the scar is invisible after 3-6 months.
In the lower eyelid, the problem is different. Here we have usually fat bags with little skin excess. But sometimes, the muscle around the eye ( the orbicularis) is loose and adds more to the sad look.
In this case we have to address the muscle as well in order to achieve a lifting effect of the lid-cheek junction.
Blepharoplasty is a minor procedure that is done under local anesthesia in the office.
I usually recommend my patients to start taking Arnica pills (9CH) 2-3 days before the surgery in order to decrease the postop bruises.
Patients are also advised not to take neither aspirin or other anti coagulant agents before the surgery.
